Art

This term my class for art are making african masks. it is a long proccess becuase we have to paper mache 5 layers so the molds on the card board will come out affectivly. So far most people have started to form and paper mache the news paper on, but, some people are sill on their draft! luckily that isn't me anyway. For a long time we have been looking at african masks and they look really detailed and cleverly done all I hope is that ours turn out is good....

Below is one of the many pictures we looked at to give us inspration.

Rich task term 1

For rich task this term we are doing turangawaewae which means 'the place I stand.' We have to research about our family history, cultures, traditions etc.then at the end of the term we have to present this information by performing a speech. So for a school trip this term the teachers have organised for us to go to the thearte to watch a play! Every day I can't wait to get stuck back into work and find out so many things I have never learnt before. In my opinion I think this rich task is going to be a good one and so will be all the others through out the rest of my last year 6 primary year.

Writing

This term for writing we have the theme 'hide and seek.' We have to write about either the hider or the seeker and in our piece of writing we have to show the intro (beginning) middle (problem and resolution) and the end (conclusion) It's been really fun and when I'm finshed I might be able to post it up onto the blog!

X homework assignment

Xmas?

Xmas is the nick name for Christmas, the Greek letter 'x' is the first letter for the Greek word for Christ, Xristos. Xmas therefore means "Christ's Mass." The abbreviation has been around since the 16th century.

Why do we celebrate Xmas?
For members of the Christian faith, Xmas is the traditional day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The actual date of Jesus' birth is not known, but December 25 became the date to commemorate the occasion. The date was chosen by the Romans to coincide with the winter solstice and other winter festivals as a way to convert the Romans to Christianity without forcing them to give up their pagan feasts. During the Middle Ages, the celebration of Jesus' birth became a time of feasting and gift giving. The celebration of this holiday was popular at some times in history, and at other times it was forgotten.

Why do we have Xmas trees?
Back in the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, traveled to Germany to spread the Word of God. Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to the German people. The German people started to revere the Fir Tree as "God's Tree". In the next 5 centuries, the tree became a symbol of Christianity, and was being hung upside-down from the ceiling as a sign of Christianity.
The first known decorated Christmas tree was at Riga in Latvia, in 1510. Martin Luther decorated a small Christmas tree in 1535 with candles for his children, to show them how the stars twinkle through the night.
